DSLR Glossary of Terms |
Full Frame Imager = This means that the imaging sensor is the same size as 35mm film. 35mm lenses will operate on these DSLRs with the same focal lengths as they do on 35mm film cameras. APS-C Imager = This imager is smaller than a Full Frame imager. Also referred to as a cropped imager. Lenses used on SLRs with APS-C imagers have a focal length about 1.6x that of full frame imagers. This means that the telephoto end of the lens will be greater. New digital lenses have been developed for these type of SLRs. DX Imager = As with the APS-C imager, the DX imager for Nikon DSLRs is smaller than a full frame imager. Lenses used with DX SLRs have a focal length conversion of 1.5x the focal length. ISO = This refers to how sensitive the image sensor is to the amount of light present. The higher the ISO, the more sensitive the image sensor and ability to take pictures in low-light situations. Live View = Allows you to preview your picture on the LCD screen instead of only through the viewfinder. Full Time Autofocus = When taking videos with your SLR, this feature will allow your camera to adjust the focus as you move or your subject moves after the video recording starts. Normal DSLRs without this feature can autofocus initially when you first start taking video, but do not continue to autofocus as the video is being shot. They must manually focus. Burst Mode = This is how many pictures (or frames) can be taken rapid fire per second at maximum resolution. HD Movie Mode = These cameras can operate as an HD camcorder as well as an SLR. We also list the resolution (1080p and 720p) with the (frames per second) for the HD movie mode. Exposure Durability = How many pictures can you expect to get over the lifetime of the camera. TFT LCD = This refers to the LCD screen in the back of the camera. |
